2009 BMW 7-Series gets aggressive

The latest prototype of the next redesigned BMW 7-Series has been spotted on the streets of Munich and our favorite artist Christian Schulte has produced these latest renderings to give us a better idea of what we can see next year. As you can see from these latest photo renderings, the next BMW 7-Series will have a new grille with a large BMW-style kidney (taking hints from the CS Concept) and a wider and lower hood for a sportier look. The sedan appears to be a little bigger than the current generation.

Sources say that the next-generation BMW 7-Series will have an even more elegant look than ever before. The interior of the 2009 BMW 7-Series will also see major upgrades.

specifications will start from a 3.0 liter engine producing up to 272 horsepower and a new S65 V8 engine producing 414 horsepower. A revamped version of the 6.0 liter V12 engine is also expected.

New Harley-Davidson touring chassis for 2009

New Harley-Davidson touring chassis for 2009
An all-new chassis underpins Harley-Davidson’s popular Touring models for 2009. Redesigned from the tires up for a responsive ride and enhanced capacity and comfort, the Motor Company claims that the seven 2009 Touring models ride like new motorcycles, while preserving the firm’s iconic styling.

“Under the skin, our 2009 Touring models are essentially new motorcycles,” said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson vice president of core customer marketing. “There is likely no profile on the American road more distinctive than that of a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle, and we were able to retain the character of each model while significantly improving the riding experience in many ways.”

Forming the core of the 2009 Touring chassis is a new frame with a single-spar, rigid backbone designed to sustain the demands of long-haul touring riders and today’s powerful engines. The new frame provides a strong foundation that supports a 70-pound increase in carrying capacity.

A separate bolt-on tail section isolates the main frame from the tail frame, improving the fit-and-finish of the rear area of the motorcycle through more-precise alignment of the rear fender over the rear wheel.

Front wheel diameter on all models except the Road King is increased to 17 inches from 16 inches, while the width of the 16-inch rear wheel is increased to five inches from three inches.

The wider rear wheel accommodates a new 180/65-16 rear tire that is wider and has a lower aspect ratio than the tire it replaces. The new front tire, a 130/80-17, also has a lower aspect ratio for a more modern look and improved handling response.

All 2009 Touring models will be equipped with new Dunlop D407 multi-tread rear tires designed specifically for the new touring chassis, which the Motor Company claims deliver up to 25 percent more rear-tire tread life than previous tires.

BMW to make it's mark in motorsport

BMW to make it's mark in motorsport

The revelation that BMW is set to enter the World Superbike Championship in 2009 – as revealed in MCN this week – perhaps shouldn’t be such a surprise, since the firm has been gradually revamping its image for the last five years.

While the firm has long been involved in four-wheeled motorsport, and has competed on two wheels in events like the Paris Dakar rally, its recent entry in the Le Mans 24 hour race was the first time in 50 years the firm ran its own works road racing team.

But the build-up to that has been a long time coming. For several years BMW has run the Boxer Cup championship for R1100S machines, and the PowerCup for the K1200R, as well as providing significant sponsorship to the MotoGP championship.
And the increased motorsport activity has been reflected in its production model range. The K1200S, K1200R and the new R1200S all show a new, sportier face to a firm who’s products were once considered the two wheeled equivalent to a comfy pair of slippers.

And it’s not just road racing that BMW has shown an interest in. Its 450cc enduro prototype hinted at a greater involvement in off-road competition, and just last week BMW signed a deal to buy the Husqvarna marque in its entirety from previous owner Claudio Castiglioni. That gives it a ready-made range of off-road machines, ready to race – although the bikes will retain Husqvarna branding rather than gaining BMW badges.

The decision to enter WSB might come after a behind the scenes flirtation with the idea of a MotoGP bike – albeit a brief affair that came to nothing – but the production-based championship is arguably a more fitting slot for the firm’s image. Where treks like the Long Way Round publicise the abilities of its off-road R1200GS, racing in WSB will give a marketing push to its more road-based bikes.

It’s not the first time BMW has considered the WSB championship. Back in 1992 it developed a boxer twin superbike with the intention of taking on the all-conquering Ducatis in WSB. Called the R1 – long before Yamaha owned that name – the BMW prototype used an all-new 1000cc, DOHC, water-cooled boxer twin, with around 160bhp. Not much by today’s standards, but enough to be competitive back then.
Late in the bike’s development, BWM decided the design wouldn’t be competitive enough to guarantee the success needed to make the investment worthwhile, and backed away from the idea of racing.

Now it’s back. The new project, which uses a four-cylinder engine, promises to be truly competitive. Codenamed 190/190 inside the factory, the bike is targeting 190bhp at the crankshaft and a 190kg wet weight in road-going trim. If it hit that, race versions should have no problem meeting the 210bhp-plus needed to be competitive in WSB, and slimming down to the 162kg minimum weight limit for the series.

BMW isn’t commenting on the project officially, but an insider told MCN that there would be an announcement about its race plans later this year. He also hinted that we were in for a big surprise at one of this year’s major bike shows, suggesting a prototype of the new machine could appear.

Even if it does reveal the bike this year, BMW won’t be racing in WSB until 2009 – but showing a prototype will allow it the luxury of testing relatively publicly for a year, on the tracks used by the WSB series, without having to try to hide the bike. Production versions of the 190/190 could also go on sale before its race debut, as BMW will need to meet the production targets set by the WSB series to homologate the machine.

Meanwhile, another version - the new 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid may delivers 155 hp and 136 lb.-ft. of torque as it is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that coupled with an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission or e-CVT.

Both Mercury Milan models also will be available in showrooms in spring 2009 (same time as 2010 Ford Fusion Sport).

 2010 Mercury Milan-Hybrid-2

Press Release
The Mercury Milan builds on a strong foundation of quality and reliability, adding to the mix for the 2010 model year an all-new hybrid model, more fuel-efficient gasoline powertrain options, class-exclusive technologies and a more refined, sophisticated design.

“The Milan has been a strong part of the Mercury lineup since its initial launch and has helped attract more consumers to dealer showrooms,” said John Felice, general manager, Ford, Lincoln Mercury Marketing. “For sophisticated consumers looking for a stylish hybrid, the Milan now offers them the most fuel-efficient hybrid sedan in its class.”

Chief designer Darrell Behmer and his team had the advantage of working from a vehicle that’s been lauded by consumers and consumer groups. “Our approach was to build upon the Milan’s strengths – to improve rather than reinvent,” Behmer said. “From a design standpoint, we wanted to clarify the design, making it cleaner and more modern.”

The changes to the exterior design were focused on the grille, fenders, hood, and front and rear fascias. The chin was pulled forward and the fascia was pulled down to give the 2010 Mercury Milan a wider, sportier look. Those changes as well as substantial underbody work made for a cleaner, more aerodynamic car.

With all models, the interior design team created a more contemporary, technical look with metallic new finishes on the instrument panel that carry through on the center console, doors and steering wheel. The all new instrument panel is finished with a soft upper and lower skin and has much less hard plastic than Japanese competitors. A redesigned leather wrapped steering wheel with form fitting palm swells, and new shifter, and wrapped and padded armrests have been added, increasing the Milan’s sportiness and comfort at all key driver touch points.

The seats received a makeover, as well. The seat contour has been revised, with more side support and overall a more comfortable seat with smoother bolsters and more-textural inserts. The seats also feature contrasting stitching and leather inserts to give the Milan even more attitude, befitting this mid-size sedan.

The gauge cluster has been designed with day time backlighting, a black lens, and 3-D elements to create a high tech jewel-like appearance, similar to a fine watch. Drivers will be greeted by a new “welcome” sequence that makes the Milan seem as if it’s coming to life.

Gauge needles sweep back and forth as the lighting and new chimes come on. The ambient lighting system offers the option of illuminating the front and rear footwells and front cup holders.

The two-tone look on the interior continues as a Milan signature, with satin-aluminum accents and a wood finish around the center stack. The Milan features Dark Charcoal Black, Medium Light Stone and Camel as interior choices through the Premier Series, which includes embossed leather.

An improved seat design with a new perforation pattern has been added as well. The seat contour itself was revised, with more side support to help create a softer seat overall.

What Will Car Boy Buy? Help Me Choose My Ride.

What Will Car Boy Buy? Help Me Choose My Ride.
Buying a new car can be exciting, as in “I’m so glad to unload my clunker, and smell that ‘new car’ smell again. Or it can be a drag, as in, “I’d rather go to the dentist for root canal on my way to a tax audit than go to the local dealership.”

If you are an auto industry journalist, like me, the process is unique. First, the “new car” smell is not exactly something I covet. I drive new cars all the time as pat of the job. That means I don’t have to go for a lot of test drives at dealerships. Thank Goodness! Nothing against dealers, but if I didn’t have the advantage of driving new cars all the time, I’d have to engage with a whole slew of hungry salespeople just to test drive a half-dozen cars, and the endure all the follow-up e-mails.

No, my problem is a different one. I know too much. Not only have I had a lot of seat-time in all the cars I am considering for my next purchase, but I know very well the cars that are around the corner, arriving next year. I don’t know if I can hold out. I need a car to use in between press cars, and I don’t fancy renting. I had a paid-for 1998 Subaru Outback until recently. I could have driven it another five or six years, I imagine. Grrrr. Maybe I should have. It had about 135,000 miles on it. But I decided to gift it to someone in need of a reliable, inexpensive ride.

I am going to share my shopping journey with our readers, step by painful step, until I decide on what I am going to buy. And then I’ll share what happens when I finally sign on the dotted line.

By the way…feel free to offer me suggestions.

First: what am I looking for? Here are the parameters. I want something that is fun to drive, a car that gives me some feedback. I want a vehicle that gets terrific gas mileage. Gas prices are going to hover above $3.00 a gallon where I live for some time to come. And, I predict, we will see $4.00 per gallon in the next 24 months. I prefer a hatch-back, though I haven’t shut out the possibility of a sedan. I prefer an all-wheel-drive option, but it might not be a deal breaker. I want factory installed satellite radio and heated seats. And I prefer a manual transmission. I also prefer not to spend more than $25,000. As far as I am concerned the cheaper the better. And I’m not totally sold on a new car. I considered a used car this week too.

For now, here are the choices I have narrowed down to (the range may surprise some): Ford Focus (2008); Nissan Versa, Honda Fit, Saturn Astra, Saturn Vue Green Line, Honda Civic Hybrid, VW GTI, VW Rabbit, BMW 325ix (2005 used), Ford Fusion (manual transmission), Chevy HHR, Mazda3, MazdaSpeed3, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, Volvo C30, Scion xD, Scion xB. The cars coming next year that I am anxious to consider are the 2008 VW Jetta TDI, BMW 1 Series and MINI Clubman.

My New Honda City ZX GXi

My New Honda City ZX GXi
Today I got my new car delivered - a "New Warm Silver" colour

I have been planning for a new car to replace my Opel Corsa 1.4 GLS, for last 12 months after its warranty (1 year base and 2 years extended warranty) expired, but the interia of acting on it was too much for me to do anything. Personally I am not a Car "Lover" - car is more a utility to commute that's about it for me.

Another reason for the wait was that my Opel Corsa was doing well. I had no complaints about the car, was extremely easy to drive and park in City conditions, size was compact and absolutely no problems. The only minus was mileage, which in the four years I owned, I could never cross more than 7Kms per litre. For strange reasons, GM discontinued the car in India a year or so back and started pushing their "Chevy" brand of cars instead. This meant spares for Corsa became sparse (or atleast thats what the market was talking) and the value for re-sale of the car diminished significantly. After taking a price quote from two used car dealers in Chennai including Sundaram Motors and Manipal, I sold to a relative of a friend. Even then I could manage to get less than 1/4 (one-fourth) of what I paid for the car exactly 4 years back - lower than the allowed income tax depreciation :-(. If there is a moral to this story - then don't think of Cars as investments anymore in India, second buy the popular moving brands and not a niche vehicle if you plan to resell it in few years.
